Kastus - innovation in anti-viral coating

by Startacus Admin
The lowdown on Kastus, the Dublin-based startup that has developed the world's most innovative antimicrobial surface-coating technology
It’s of no surprise that at the tail end of a pandemic, people are particularly wary of germs, bacteria, and, you know, viruses. We dry out our hands with the strongest hand sanitisers we can find, we buy UV phone sanitisers, sprays, and who knows what else in an effort to kill anything that shouldn’t be on our person or surfaces, and we did half of this before the pandemic was even ever a thing. We would be off to a better start, though, if our surfaces were already antibacterial and passively working to keep us safe.
Dublin-based nanotechnology startup Kastus manufactures surface-coating technology that does just this. The application is a permanent surface cover for glass and ceramic, enabling these surfaces to self-sanitise, killing over 99% of bacteria and viruses, the startup says. This includes E. coli, Hepatitis A, MRSA, human Coronavirus, and flu.
The solution is non-toxic and does not leach, and is designed to last the lifetime of the product it is applied to. It relies on only natural light to function, rather than UV light, and continues to kill bacteria and viruses in the dark too. Currently, they provide a spray-on surface for glass and ceramics, screen protectors for phones and tablets, and screen glass for public and personal touchscreens, and they have 44 pending patents around the world. Kastus’s solution is already being used by clients such as Lenovo and Lavazza.
In June, the startup announced that they had raised €5.65 million in a Series A round led by Alpha Ascent Ventures with Atlantic Bridge Capital, Carragh Holdings, and Enterprise Ireland continuing their support. With talent already locally in the UK, the US, Korea, and China, Kastus will use this funding to grow those global teams and further their reach.
With so many devices, both personal and public now being touchscreen, we are already past the point where having this kind of built-in protection doesn’t just make sense; it’s a necessity.
