Juno tackles the financial literacy gap

The lowdown on fintech startup, Juno, the financial education platform for women and non-binary people
Becoming financially literate early on in life is important, and there has been a recent boost in the number of fintech focused startups (fintech startup Strive, springs to mind) creating apps and platforms to help better people’s understanding of the subject.
The problem is that there is still a gender gap in financial literacy and confidence that needs to be balanced. While the financial information doesn’t change depending on the gender of the person needing it, the environment in which it is applied does, and although general apps to increase financial literacy for everyone can be of benefit to anyone, a platform conscious of the different challenges and gaps in financial education that are specific to essentially anyone who isn’t male is of huge value.
UK fintech startup Juno is addressing this gap with their app aimed specifically at women and non-binary users to learn more about a range of financial topics, from cryptocurrency, to mortgages, to investing, and much more. The app is modelled on the highly popular language app Duolingo, and teaches users via info-cards and bitesize video lessons from female experts.
As with so many successful apps, Juno includes gamification to help not only make the learning more fun, but to also solidify and put into use the information learned in the lessons. Polls, quizzes, and progress trackers help to ensure that the information that has just gone in one ear doesn’t come straight out of the other.
For now, Juno is free to use, and next year will see their paid version being introduced, again in a similar way to Duolingo’s ‘freemium’ model.
In October, Juno announced that it had launched and is already in use by the thousands of followers they had even before launch. This comes after a £250,000 pre-seed round that will help them to expand from the UK to France and Germany, and beyond.
