Inventors, Designers and Innovators! Nesta wants you!

by Startacus Admin
Nesta, the UK’s innovation foundation have just launched a pretty exciting competition aimed at all you inventors and designers out there.
The “Hands Off My Bike” challenge is asking people all across the UK to come up with a breakthrough innovation which could help make it more difficult to steal a bike.
With recent figures showing that virtually one bike gets stolen every year in the UK and that there is a pretty low recovery rate of under 5%, it’s understandable why this is an issue that needs to be addressed. Statistics have shown that bicycle theft can actually act as a deterrent with many people who experience it, stopping cycling altogether or cycling much less often.
The hope with this challenge therefore is that an innovation will be found which will help reduce the numbers of bikes stolen each year and consequently help boost the numbers of people cycling.
The competition is open to any individual or organisation and with a £50,000 prize on offer for the winner, it’s certainly worth a shot if you have an idea or a concept that you think might work.
Each entry will be judged on its’ overall environmental impact, its’ cost and its’ potential to be commercialised and implemented on a larger scale. As well as this of course, the winning innovation will be the one that requires the longest time to actually steal a bike!
Time to get the old thinking cap on! Enter your idea via the Nesta website before 18th January 2013 and who knows, yours could be just the idea they are looking for!
Best of luck to any of you who apply!
