In-app personal trainer Gym Plan proves hard work pays off

The lowdown on Gym Plan, the fitness app that is aimed at users of all levels...

This startup was Fit Gurus and took the form of a website offering guidance and pointers for weight loss, fitness, and muscle building, mainly to the more hardcore gym-goers.
This website soon became an app, which was later rebranded as Gym Plan, able to boast a pretty equal balance between male and female members.
The app features plans for toning and shaping, lean muscle building, mass muscle building, with weighted and bodyweight training including timed circuits, AMRAPs, HiiT, and cardio. The different plans can be switched around and changed to queue up like a music playlist. The app can be used with Apple watches and is compatible with Apple’s Health app. Other features and counters include calories and macros, tracking weights with reps and sets.
In late 2014, the startup was in that cohort of the Ignite accelerator in Newcastle, which taught them a lot and gave their business the kind of workout they deliver to their app’s users. Soon after this accelerator programme, they raised £200,000 in seed funding, allowing them to expand their reach, particularly in terms of user ability.
No longer aimed just at the more hardcore user, their workouts started to include more lenient entry-level stuff, opening the app up to anyone. Just over half a year after launching, they already had more than 50,000 users. This exploded as the app continued to grow, and after rebranding as Gym Plan in late 2017, their numbers doubled, with users logging on from 200 countries.
All of this hard work has continued to pay off, as on August 8 2019, Gym Plan was announced as Apple’s ‘App of the Day’ on the App Store. As Gym Plan says, “Just like working out...persistence and hard work pays off!”
