Immense - making transport simulation accessible

by Startacus Admin
The lowdown on Immense, the London-based startup that uses AI and digital simulations to help fleet managers, infrastructure operators and transportation planners make the best decisions
The smart cities of the very near future will be unable to run without a flood of data insights coming in from all over the city, and simulations will need to be run on that data in the background all the time, predicting how changes will affect the city.
But before we begin to make strides in the smart cities direction, we need to get a better grip on the transport infrastructure that we already have in place, or we’ll only be building on shaky foundations. Data insights, AI algorithms, and digital simulations are all precursors to smart cities that we can and should be using right now to give those in charge a better overview of their cities and the impact of planned changes.
London-based simulation startup Immense has the software to run these simulations to give transport network and utilities staff predictions on congestion impacts and the safety impacts of planned roadworks, and provide information on emission levels across the city.
The startup says that current decision-making is slow, expensive, and based on limited data, which means the benefits of new technologies, business models, and behaviour changes within the transport sector can’t be fully realised. The point of the platform is to allow for rapid testing of strategic and operational decisions within a digital world where risk and cost don’t matter.
Immense builds data-driven virtual worlds to act as replicas of real-world transportation, infrastructure, and mobility systems for this testing and decision-making, modelling the interaction of people, vehicles, infrastructure, and more to rapidly evaluate their impacts on transportation, economy, energy, and the environment.
In August, Transport for London (TfL) selected Immense as one of two startups from its 2019 RoadLab innovation challenge to provide smart technology to support the city’s road network, offering the transport network and utilities staff with that aforementioned information on predicted congestion impacts, emission levels, and?the?safety impacts of planned roadworks. This scheme has worked well, with the startups increasing efficiency while cutting costs.
