How to Build Your Customer Base

by Startacus Admin
Building a strong customer base for your startup is an absolute must. These tips will help you do just that...
Every business needs customers; how else do you expect to be successful? Customers are arguably the lifeblood of a business. It is a lot easier for established businesses to find customers; they already have a better brand recognition and a more reliable consumer base. The question is then, as a small business, how are you meant to build your consumer base? Generating new business and retaining existing customers is no mean feat, so read on to learn more.
Understand Your Customers
Having a better insight into what your consumers want means that you can develop strategies that are tailored to them, from your products and services to your marketing strategies and advertisements. As a result, you can differentiate yourself from your competitors and show your consumers why they should choose you.
Don’t Neglect Existing Consumers
One of the mistakes that new businesses make is to neglect existing consumers instead of choosing to chase new ones. Instead, you should be working to encourage loyalty within your customers; once a consumer has bought from you, that doesn’t mean that the relationship is over. On the contrary, if you take the time to foster a relationship with them, then you can help to ensure repeat business in the future. This is not to say that looking for new consumers isn’t important because it is. However, you need to look for ways to divide your time or develop some customer care process to look after your existing customers too.
Prioritize Great Customer Service
Ensuring that your business always offers great customer service is one way to build a reputation and attract new customers, as well as encourage repeat business. Unfortunately, consumers will and have abandoned purchases due to poor customer service. Monitor your customer service processes to see whether or not they could be improved. You could also send surveys out to your consumers to help you to improve.
Consider Partnerships
Depending on the nature of your business, you could attract more consumers by partnering either with other businesses or individuals. Before entering into a partnership, you need to do your research to see whether you are a good match for each other, do your values and ethics align? Will the partnership be mutually beneficial? Will it help you to reach your business goals? If you are considering partnering with a business, you need to find one that offers complementary services; if it is an individual, you need to assess what they bring to the table.
Advertise Thoughtfully
A portion of your customers will come from word-of-mouth recommendations, but most of the time, they will be drawn in by your advertisements. Think about your marketing strategies. Are they as effective as they should be? In order to advertise well, you need to know how best to reach your audience? Who are they, and where can they be found? The answer will depend entirely on your business and the products or services you provide. Some businesses would benefit from the use of digital marketing techniques, and some would benefit more from the use of traditional advertising methods. For example, an eCommerce business would benefit greatly from a social media presence and other digital marketing methods like banner ads, pay per clicks or sponsored posts. On the other hand, a local business would benefit a lot more from traditional marketing methods like print ads or direct mail campaigns like the ones Lob can help you with. They have a number of services that make direct mail campaigns easier and more cost-effective.
Always Be Ready to Adapt
As your business begins to grow from building up your consumer base, you might find that your business needs to adapt to this growth. The processes that have worked in the past may no longer be suitable. Conversely, methods that haven’t seen much success in the past might be better suited to your current situation. Try to avoid getting stuck in a rut, don’t be rigid; you need to be willing and able to move with the times.
Track Your Successes
You will likely try a lot of different techniques in your quest to gain more consumers, and you should be measuring the efficacy of each one. For example, how successful was your social media campaign or your promotion/discount or your mailers, or your collabs? You need to know so that you can revise your processes in the future. Over time you will be able to refine your approach and dedicate more time and money to the methods that give you the best return on investment.
To Wrap Up
Building a solid customer base takes time; you cannot expect it to happen overnight. Consistency is vital. Whatever techniques you go with, it is important that you try to keep them consistent. Come up with goals and work towards them gradually. Use the tips listed above to help you get started in widening your reach to potential consumers.
