HiiKER - the startup that's blazing a trail

by Startacus Admin
Time to embrace the great outdoors thanks to HiiKER, the Irish startup that's on a mission to help you find the best backpacking and hiking adventures.
Some people like to get away to a beach, where they can lie in the sun until they smell their flesh frying. Others like to do something on a holiday. They want to explore the countryside, the valleys, the mountains, the forests. Whether they want to explore their own country and discover hidden gems of the countryside, or travel abroad to see some foreign trees and foreign rocks, hikers and backpackers can get around a lot, and need somewhere to find their next adventure.
Irish startup HiiKER can be that somewhere. The platform boasts thousands of backpacking locations and hiking adventures, so that you’ll never run out of ideas or places to visit. On the website or app, just look at the location you’re in or going to, and you’ll see a map with all of the nearby locations that you can choose, be they a couple of miles long or over 1,000km long. On the overview page for a specific spot, you will find photos, its difficulty rating, a description about the trail and the location, statistics about it, such as length, elevation, and how long it will take, and star ratings from other users. After this, you can have a deeper look at the trail stages and their individual stats, accommodation that can be found nearby, all kinds of amenities, and read reviews and even articles about the trail.
The platform can show you plenty for free, while a subscription or one-off payment will unlock further, premium content. These include downloadable offline maps, high quality print maps, premium map layers, measurement tools, and more. And when you purchase a HiiKER Pro subscription or a one-off trail, you’ll be contributing to the development and maintenance of trails, through the startup’s partnerships with all kinds of trail organisations, from John O’Groats in the UK, to the Continental Divide Trail in the US, to The Sultan’s Trail in Bulgaria, and beyond.
In July, HiiKER announced that they had raised €500,000 of investment from Fuel Ventures, Enterprise Ireland, and private investors. This comes a year after the startup was selected for the first NDRC accelerator, hosted by Dogpatch Labs, which came with €100,000 in pre-seed investment. The funding will go towards growth, and will help with their 2023 launch in the US.
