Highbrow - Media Content aimed at children

by Startacus Admin
Keeping your children from seeing inappropriate content online is not an easy task. The internet is not designed to help you with this, and the implementation of child safety features, age verification, age classification, etc., is ineffective. Things sneak past the filters, the adverts that play on an age-appropriate video might not themselves be appropriate, and those tasked with keeping children’s content under control may not be up to the task.
YouTube Kids, for example, has come under fire for not acting quickly or effectively enough to keep inappropriate cartoon clips and the like from what is supposed to be a safe place for children.
With this in mind, a Hammersmith-based mum, Priyanka Raswant has created Highbrow. This streaming service for children between one and eleven is a little like Netflix and covers all sorts of topics focused on learning and developing skills, such as science, culture, cookery, art, dance, piano lessons, and many others. These videos are free from adverts and commercial bias and are created by independent creators and vetted by the staff before being put up on the site. After just six weeks in business, Highbrow had already hosted over 4000 videos.
Machine learning is used to learn the child’s preferences and personalise their viewing experience, as well as give parents insights into these preferences. Aside from videos, there are suggestions for parents on how to cultivate their child’s passions offline.
At £5.99 per month, Highbrow is an affordable way of getting children interested in all sorts of subjects - many of which they will not have access to in school - and keeping them safe online at the same time. For charities, schools, and families in need, there are free or subsidised subscriptions.
For creators focused on ‘healthy content’, grants are available. Highbrow is beneficial to everyone, and if they keep up the way they are going, we can see them becoming a big name in the sector.
