Heard about the Happy Pig?

Here at Startacus we love to share news stories on startup collaboration, social good, community impact and barter based business models. Take all of the above and add in a pinch of Crowdfunding and you’ve got a story that’s certainly worth sharing!

So have you heard about the Happy Pig? A hopefully soon to be realised crowdfunding project that will fund a free community space, a place where people can meet, learn, eat, drink, dance and sleep (hopefully in that order!) without a single penny changing hands?

Conceived by An Teach Saor (that’s Gaelic for The Free House) a Permaculture & gift economy based smallholding in the westThe Happy Pig project Ireland of Ireland, the concept of The Happy Pig has been developed - a 3 acre smallholding, complete with big old pig shed.

Their aim? To develop the said smallholding into a place where people can explore wild food, forest gardening, gift economics, free education, home-brewing, music and language, philosophy, bee-keeping, herbalism, perennials, natural building, no-dig annual vegetable production, writing, coppicing, storytelling, bushcraft, off-grid living and so on - and all for F-R-E-E. Phew that’s some list!

Now, I must confess at this point that I promised myself I would not ‘ham-up’ this article, but to be honest I was telling porkies - it’s too good an opportunity to use a few well placed puns.

But seriously all this activity costs money - their aim to bring the world's best teachers to the Happy Pig, as well as the world's foremost thinkers and speakers, plus all the renovation work, is a grand vision, so bearing in mind that we are Startacus - the Self Start Society, we thought it only right that we should highlight the grand scheme, so that the good folk at An Teach Saor bring home the bacon, or at least get a little more well desrved press.

We could suggest right now that you perhaps trot on over to their crowdfunding page, but that would be just too many puns….but then again...
