Hazaar - the UK's first zero waste student marketplace.

Created by students, for students; Hazaar is a Manchester-based green-tech startup that enables students to buy and sell their second hand items.
We have written before about startups created to promote sustainability in shopping, such as Beagle and its search engine for sustainable products, Twig and its ‘bank of things’ to power a circular economy, or By Rotation and its fight against fast fashion. But it is, for the most part, younger people who are most interested and best educated in things like sustainability and ethical buying and selling, so doesn’t it make sense to give young people a way to be involved in this, easily and while still at university?
Manchester-based green-tech startup Hazaar is launching at 7 universities across the country to encourage this sustainable shopping, hopefully introducing the concept to those younger people who have yet to consider it, or have a misunderstanding of it. Already launched in University of Birmingham in November 2021, students can use the Hazaar app to buy and sell to others in the university and close by, be it clothes or textbooks or more, ensuring that perfectly useable, good condition items don’t end up in a landfill.
The app is free to use, and Hazaar takes a 10% commission from every sale. The buyer’s payment is kept by Hazaar until they and the seller meet, and the buyer scans the seller’s QR code into the app to confirm that all is well, ensuring that it is harder for anyone to use the app to rip off other students.
Although only available right now in Birmingham university, starting this month, Hazaar will be launching in more universities in Leeds, Manchester, Swansea, Cardiff, Bristol, Liverpool, and Nottingham, and that’s just a start. As well as extending availability, the startup has plans to get together with local sustainable businesses and vintage sellers within walking distance of the universities to get their offerings on the app too.
