Global Entrepreneurship Week

by Startacus Admin
There are very few things which we at Startacus have a greater sense of common purpose with than Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW). For those of you who might not be familiar GEW is the worlds largest campaign to promote entrepreneurship and (like us) they focus on the promotion of enterprising spirit, collaboration, innovation and originality.
In the UK, GEW is hosted by Youth Business International in partnership with some of the country’s largest institutions including Barclays Bank and the British Library. This year, the week will run from 18th to 24th November and will have the theme “take a step forward” as its core message. In all, GEW will be playing host to over 700 events spanning the length and breadth of the UK. But never fear if you will not be in the UK during the course of the week- as the name suggests GEW is a global campaign and chances are, wherever in the world you happen to be there will be an event going on not too far away.
*I must take this opportunity to air one slight criticism….in the UK, GEW is specifically targeted towards youth, and while we certainly ain't an ageist bunch we would raise the rather obvious question of ‘what about everyone else?’ But back to the task in hand…
Last week we took an in-depth look at British Library’s Inspiring Entrepreneurs event In the Den With the Dragons and now we have picked out a few more things that we are particularly excited about.
A humble tenner… probably doesn’t look like a huge amount of money starring up at you from inside your wallet… but how far could it get you? All the way to Moscow? Well that is exactly the challenge that the University of Chester and FE Colleges are setting to their students. It’s a mammoth task worthy of Lord Sugar himself as teams of students will be tasked with setting up a profitable business using no more than their brains and a simple £10 note. The teams will be given a 48 hour trading period and the one that has made the most profit by the end wins… simple as that. The winning team will have the opportunity to use the profits made from the business to fund a trip to the Global Entrepreneurship Congress in Moscow in March 2014. We really like the sound of this event because not only does it sound like great fun but it will give the participants the chance to use their innovation and intuition and will demonstrate that you don't need a huge amount of capital to start your own business!
