The lowdown on Garçon Wines and its sustainable innovations in one of the world's most traditional industries  - the wine industry!

garcon wine bottleInteresting developments in one of the world's oldest industries - wine - with the news that it is being brought right up to date thanks to London-based startup Garçon Wines. They have created a revolutionary flat wine bottle that’s made from 100% recycled PET(NB - not single-use plastic).

The industry is welcoming this innovative reinvention of the traditional 750ml wine bottle into a product that is both lightweight and spatially efficient. It's helping the industry to lower its CO2 emissions, reduce logistics costs and ultimately contribute towards a healthier planet.

The fact that they have recently been featured in articles on the future of the wine sector in both Decanter and Harpers goes some way to illustrate the impact that the company is currently having.

Innovation has not been very evident in the wine packaging industry over the last two centuries. In fact there’s been very little innovation in the wine packaging industry at all. Since the introduction of the Bordeaux and Burgundy style bottles in the 19th century, the most significant developments have been the bag-in-box and the screw cap - both of which were introduced over 50 years ago.

They are 87% lighter and 40% spatially smaller than traditional bottles. In terms of environmental impact, the virgin PET bottles generate 77% less emissions than glass alternatives.

The company have also developed the world’s most compact wine case with a unique packing orientation that allows 10 bottles to be packed in a case that would otherwise carry just four round, glass bottles of the same volume. Again helping to create a 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and overall logistics costs.

We love hearing about all sorts of innovation - whether it's in a traditional industry like this or elsewhere. And quite frankly we can't wait to see these bottles on shelves near us soon!
