G-Science to optimise the performance of esports athletes

by Startacus Admin

G-Science is aiming to help esports athletes achieve optimal performance, improve health and prevent burnout. We found out more about this Belfast-based startup, who want to break the mould within competitive gaming...
Esports. You may be forgiven for not knowing that competitive gaming is an actual sport, but it is the fastest-growing sports industry in the world, with a higher viewership than Major League Baseball and is on target to have half a billion viewers by 2021.
But because this is a relatively new sector, the physiological stresses and strains on players aren’t as clear and well-known as in other sports. No, they aren’t in danger of concussion or driving a race car into a wall or pulling a hamstring, but they are swimming in adrenaline without physical activity to burn it off, they are experiencing high stress levels, they are putting a lot of strain on their central nervous system, and they are displaying the same cortisol levels as Formula 1 drivers.
So while some people may not take the mental and physical health issues of esports players seriously, it is a cause for concern, and the industry sees a lot of burnout in its players, with some having to retire before they even hit 20 years old!Co-founded by Ryan Scollan, Mollie Drew and Matthew Stevenson, Belfast-based G-Science is here to tackle this issue by improving both the mental and the physical health of esports players.
Sports science, including psychological skills training, mindfulness, nutrition, and exercise are all a part of G-Science’s holistic approach to enhance a player’s life, improve performance, and give them a competitive edge.
It leverages existing hardware to capture biometric data from players, which is then analysed using validated scientific methods and presented to the coach via an interactive dashboard, enabling the coach to see a summary of their players’ health in real-time.
And by analysing a player’s current mental and physical position, G-Science can offer recommendations on next steps to eliminate weaknesses and burnout.
G-Science is currently a part of the 6-month Propel 19 pre-accelerator run by Ignite and funded by Invest NI, we thought they pitched really well at the recent Startup World Cup event in Belfast, and now we look forward to seeing just how far that propels (yes) an already fast-growing and exciting esports startup.
If, like G-Science, you are a Northern Irish based startup, take a look at upSTART 2019, the startup pitch competition that will take place at this year's Digital DNA in Belfast. Applications are now open. This year the competition features an all-expenses paid trip to explore the New York tech scene for the winning NI startup!
