furthr - climate action made easy

by Startacus Admin
The lowdown on furthr, the London-based startup that's created a subscription service to help make climate action fun and easy too.
We have written about plenty of startups doing their part to help us reduce our carbon footprint, from startups like The Tyre Collective to Manchester-based Sourceful. Some of these, such as Ecologi, go a step further and make a difference not only to the environment, but in the process also help people in the short term, for example by paying them to plant trees in heavily deforested areas.
Climate change is a global issue that affects everyone, though not equally, and must be dealt with by everyone - startups like these help us to do just that.
London-based startup Furthr has created a platform similar to Ecologi’s to help us offset our carbon footprint, help plant trees around the world, support renewable projects, and to enter us into prize draws every month to win anything from chocolate to gift cards to money.
The app allows you to track your personal carbon reductions with contextual examples, the number of trees you got planted, updates on projects you are supporting, and provides personalised carbon reduction tips. The platform runs a subscription model starting at £4 per month to plant 10 trees every month and reduce a ‘small footprint’, and goes all the way up to £24 per month to plant 64 trees every month and reduce 4 ‘average footprints (~2.8 tonnes of carbon).
Like Ecologi, Furthr supports projects all around the world, including reforesting Madagascar, which has been 90% deforested; providing buildings in India with solar water heating cells to help reduce 80% of their energy that still comes from coal; and reforesting Mozambique, 45% of whose population lives below the poverty line and relies heavily on biodiversity, yet the country loses 1,000 football fields worth of forest each day.
To date, Furthr’s website stats show that they have saved 7,900 tonnes of carbon emissions and planted over 21,700 trees around the world. We hope and expect to hear more and more about this startup and the projects they support in the future.
