The lowdown on Frequency, the Dublin-based startup that's on a mission to innovate internet based communication systems for the aviation industry...

flyfrequency globeDelays cost airlines around $25 billion every year - just over $1 million per aircraft. This is the problem that 3 Aer Lingus pilots founded Dublin-based Frequency to combine their 40 years of flight experience in order to solve.

They say that 50% of these delays are under the airline’s own control, and are caused by the outdated and complicated web of communication channels that they use. So improving communications between pilots, operations control, and maintenance stands to cut delays by said 50%.

The system allows communication through voice and text, as well as photo and file sharing, both on the ground and in mid-flight. This simple information sharing allows for distribution of decision-making among the right people, in real-time, in order to arrive at the right decisions faster. They say that this simple improvement will increase time performance, avoid diversions, and reduce the impact of disruption.

This real-time troubleshooting and support can save the airline a lot of money, as well as passengers a lot of frustration - in the example used on their website, an airline running 225 aircraft with an annual average of 365,000 flights, can save more than $16 million per year by using Frequency’s platform.

This comes after other investments from Enterprise Ireland’s Competitive Start Fund, which granted them €50,000; Enterprise Ireland and Amazon inviting them to take part in their AWS Activate Program and providing $100,000 for AWS services; and from the Shannon Group, the IAA, Boeing, Enterprise Ireland, and Dublin City University all coming together to put over €2 million into Propeller Shannon, a programme to support aerospace startups.

As well as investment, Frequency has won Silver at 2018’s National Startup Awards in the Early Stage Startup category, was shortlisted for Plug and Play, and was one of only 36 startups to be invited to pitch at Hangar 51’s 2019 pitch day in Madrid. It seems safe to say, then, that plenty of others see the value of Frequency’s potential to solve around 50% of airline delays!
