Epowar - the startup aiming to revolutionise women's safety

by Startacus Admin
Epowar is a mobile app that connects to your smartwatch and automatically detects physical distress when you're out walking or running alone.
In light of the recent tragic events across Ireland and the UK in relation to women's safety; it is refreshing to see a new student-led startup, Epowar aim to help, by enabling women to feel that little bit safer!
So how exactly will Epowar help? Currently the team is developing a smartwatch app, which monitors heart rate and body motion, so if the user of the watch is in any type of distress, the app can sense anything unusual. In the event of an unfortunate and perhaps all-too-common attack, the smartwatch app notifies the users contacts with crucial information such as; live location alongside setting off an alarm and recording evidence in the cloud.
Epowar Co-Founders, E.J Roodt and Maks Rahman both have impressive experience which enhances trust and confidence in their new tech. EJ, a 21 year old Business student first carried out a 6 month industrial placement in tech consulting which inspired her interest in building digital products. Mak is an engineering graduate and has significant experience in detecting psychological stress using sensors due to a placement he undertook at Fraunhofer IPA. They met in German class and the rest is history…
With recent statistics showing that one in two women feel unsafe walking alone after dark in a public place and that two thirds of women aged between 16-35 years old have experienced at least one form of harassment over 12 months, it’s clear that innovation such as Epowar is most certainly needed.
And with plans to launch on UK app stores within the next nine months, we strongly believe this tech could be a good start for women to find the confidence once again, to go out alone more often - as they should!
