The lowdown on Entocycle, the London-based startup that's using insects and technology to help drive a global transition to sustainable protein.

entocycle logo.It has been a while since we’ve written about insects. ‘Why don’t you write more about insects,’ we hear you say. If you insist. When it comes to protein production, insects are an extremely valuable source. Not only do they provide a lot of protein, but the amount of resources - land, water, time - used in farming insects is drastically lower than from other sources, as is the CO2 production.

Entomologist+MS.Animal feed is currently facing a shortage due to a number of factors, including reduced production, and by increasing the production of insect protein, we can address that shortage. But, although it might not be a pleasant thought, insects are also a good source of protein for humans, as well as providing more calcium than milk, and more iron and zinc than lean beef. So now is a pretty good time to help the insect farming industry grow.

London-based startup Entocycle has developed a computer vision, automation, and machine learning platform to this end. The startup is specifically focused on black soldier fly farms, as these flies not only grow and reproduce rapidly, but they can survive on food waste, which provides the valuable bonus effect of reducing the amount of food waste that goes into landfills. Their platform allows farmers to automate a lot of their work and reduce the amount of manual labour involved by using a combination of hardware and software to do things such as measuring populations to automate food requirements or controlling temperature to optimise insect health. In so doing, yield is greatly increased.

In early 2023, Entocycle announced that they had raised £4 million in funding in a Series A round led by Climentum Capital, and included participation from Lowercarbon Capital, Teampact Ventures, and Ace & Company. This funding will allow the company to further their roll-out of their products and services to allow better, more efficient insect farming during this critical time of shortage and high demand.
