The lowdown on Deaf AI, the Toronto-based startup that's developed an innovative AI-powered solution to help people who are deaf to have better digital interactions.

Deaf ai logoIn a more connected world, we frequently interact with people who don’t speak the same language as us. To help bridge the gap, there are plenty of services to help translate what we’re saying so that we can hold conversations even when we don’t remember how to so much as ask where the bibliotheque is in each other’s language. There is little in the way of this kind of consideration when it comes to people who speak in sign language, however. Whether it’s a business meeting over Zoom or an interaction in the metaverse, the digital world could be vastly improved by simply adding sign language support.

Toronto-based startup Deaf AI is working to help improve digital interactions for the one in five people around the world who are deaf or hard of hearing. The startup uses AI that is able to detect and understand sign language when it sees it. This means that anyone in a meeting using sign language doesn’t need to rely on typing and hoping others are paying attention, because the AI will translate for them.

As well as this, Deaf AI is working on an app that will provide a digital sign language interpreter for digital worlds and augmented reality, be it games, the metaverse, or through AR applications in places like museums.

With the number of languages in the world being easily - and reasonably accurately - translated so that we can all interact with each other, it’s long past time that sign language be translated too, and we look forward to seeing more from Deaf AI.
