Daye cramp-soothing CBD tampons set for Autumn launch

London-based startup Daye is taking the benefits of CBD and applying it to tampons for localised, faster relief of pain and discomfort.
To dumb it down to our level, cannabidiol (CBD) is the medicinal part of cannabis. CBD products are named as such because they do not include tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the druggy, not good part of cannabis. CBD is used to treat all sorts of ailments from simple trouble sleeping, to pain relief, to more serious conditions, and people’s experiences with its effectiveness vary, in part due to their individual cannabinoid receptors. So with that in-depth, doctor-level understanding, let’s look at today’s startup...
London-based startup Daye is taking the benefits of CBD and applying it to tampons for localised, faster relief of pain and discomfort in an area that has the highest concentration of those cannabinoid receptors in the body.
Very little is offered in the way of relief for menstrual discomfort and cramps that many, if not most, women feel every month and so Daye is building things from the ground up, focusing on three main areas: dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramp itself), manufacturing standards, and sustainability.
The CBD pain relief is tested on women - something that should be obvious, but much of what is offered to women for these pains and discomfort are derived from medicine that was never tested on women. They are also developed and tested alongside doctors to ensure that they are doctor-approved.
Next, Daye is creating pharmaceutical-grade standards for these tampons, which is not something that actually exists yet, as they are not currently classed as medical devices in Europe. Manufacturing will be kept in-house, ensuring these standards for sanitisation and safety.
Lastly, sustainability is an important factor to the startup, and for obvious reasons. Tampons are not particularly environmentally-friendly, and with over half the world’s population needing to use them, keeping the environment in mind is good. Daye focuses on material innovation to ensure their products and packaging are environmentally responsible.
Recently, Daye raised $5.5 million in investment from investors in both the US and Europe, led by ventures in Silicon Valley and London. This will come in handy as Daye races towards the launch of their product and it starts dropping through letterboxes, in sync.
