Data Science Startups wanted for Europe’s premier Data Science Accelerator
Earlier in 2016 we reported on the launch of a major data science startup accelerator- now we are delighted to announce that after a successful first cohort, applications for a new, expanded accelerator are open once again!
Winton Labs
Winton Labs is an accelerator for early-stage startups involved in the creation of data, or the application of data science. The new programme will be run as a collaboration between investment management and data technology firm Winton, and VC firm Winton Ventures.
Winton have a long history of applying data science to disrupt the world of investing, and so are well placed to offer guidance and development support to up-and-coming technologies working within the field of data science. Whilst the programme will leverage this expertise, it is not set to resemble a classic corporate accelerator, with much of the mentorship coming from an external network of startup experts, technologists and academics.
Applications for the programme opened on the 23rd August, and will close again on 7th October, You can see a full timeline of the application process and programme delivery here.
Programme Content
The programme will last for 3 months, during which participating startups will take up residence at ‘The Lab’ co-working space at Winton’s London HQ. This programme does not require startups to part with any of their business’ equity and each team will receive a stipend of between £5k and £15k. Some of the things that participants will be able to benefit from whilst in residence include;
-
Access to a unique combination of mentors including Winton’s data scientists, business leaders and VC team
-
Access to a vast, well established network of external mentors
-
A position within a targeted and effective launchpad for data science focused startups
-
The ability to leverage a deep network in data science across the startup ecosystem, industry and academia.

Who Should Apply?
Winton Labs would be a valuable opportunity for data science startups working within a wide range of specialist areas, in particular the team are encouraging applications from startups in the following areas.
-
Data Science and Machine Intelligence: Entrepreneurs building companies where the application of data science is critical to success.
-
Forecasting: Businesses that are focused on interesting or difficult forecasting problems
-
Interesting Data : Companies that are creating new or novel data streams.
There is also a wildcard category under which Winton Labs will consider applications from brilliant minds that don’t yet have a clear product plan, but have a keen interest in data and analysis.
As an example, some of the startups who have already taken part in Winton Labs include-
-
CheckRecipient- a technology which automatically predicts and prevents misaddressed emails from being accidentally sent to the wrong recipient.
-
Illumr- a behavioural pattern prediction tool for use within organisations.
-
Intelligent Layer- A startup which develops machine learning and reinforcement learning algorithms to improve the way companies use their data and interact with the world.
The deadline for applications is 7th October, with the programme scheduled to begin on 14th November. Pop over to the Winton Labs site for all the info you will need, and follow them on Twitter for regular updates.
