Crowdfunding Concerts - we check out Songkick Detour

Crowdfunding Concerts - we check out Songkick Detour... Ever bemoaned the quality of gigs and concerts you get to attend close to where you live? If you don’t live in a big city, the answer one would imagine ( if you are into music that is) is probably a resounding yes!
Recently, apart from going on music forums, facebooking or tweeting the band, or rather directly emailing a band’s promoters, there was little you could do to influence the chances of your fave band playing where you live. Until now that is...
Jumping on the bandwagon (sorry, cheap pun) that is ‘crowdfunding’, a couple of platforms have sprung into action to address this very issue. One such platform - Detour, from London startup Songkick gives fans the opportunity to group together to pre-fund a gig or concert - so that there is enough interest and hard cash pledged to cover the concert and logistical costs. (P.S. We jumped on the crowdfunding bandwagon ourselves recently too!)
Songkick Detour which until recently has been in semi-private beta, went public last month and admittedly started its scope for gigs in the safest part of the country - London, which has both an amazing thirst for music, an abundance of venues and oh yes, about 8 Million people.
A little while back, over in Brazil, Queremos (the aptly named ‘We’ in English) had a pretty similar idea and created a crowdfunding platform for concerts in order to increase the number of bands that played in Rio de Janeiro.
Songkick is a super cool startup that launched in 2007 to make sure that fans got notified when and where their favourite bands decide to play again.
It therefore makes sense that for a platform that is keen to get fans in front of bands, that they flip the fans/promoters/venues/locations thing on its head and make sure that the fans have some of the power to call the shots. With plans to develop this platform UK wide, we look forward to seeing how this crowdfunding space develops and discovering what wonderful places and spaces will get to hear the bands they love on their very own doorstep (not literally of course - that would be weird!).
