Coroflo - innovation in breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is an important part of a baby’s development, with benefits to baby and mother including nutritional, immune system, developmental, and psychological. However, in the UK, apparently only 1% of mothers exclusively breastfeed, with a quarter of women bringing it to an end by only 6 weeks.
The reasons for this of course vary, but the majority of women cite the fear of low supply as the reason for premature weaning. Understandably, first-time mothers in particular lack confidence that they recognise when their baby has had enough milk.
Coroflo is an Irish startup that takes this problem and combines existing technology - nipple shields and flow monitors - to create a simple solution.
Rather than pre- and post-feed weighing, which is slow and has high levels of inaccuracy, the Coro breastfeeding monitor simply monitors how much milk flows through the ultra-thin silicone nipple shield it is attached to. This works the same as any other shield currently available, but the Coro connects to the companion app to display flow in real time. There is no need for wires or chargers, as the monitor itself is self-contained and unobtrusive.
Data collected can show you the balance between left and right, and compare feed duration and volume over time, allowing you to track changes and patterns. Because parents are forever concerned about how their baby is developing compared to others, Coroflo’s cloud-based analytics can show you how your feeding compares with other babies of a similar age.
Coroflo have just been selected to attend Web Summit as finalists for the ESB Spark of Genius award. And rightly so: Being the mother of a teeny, tiny, fragile new person can be frightening and stressful enough without having to deal with things so easily solved as the monitoring of your baby’s feeding.
Whether or not they win this particular award, we think they will have a lot more coming to them.
