Cloudsmith package management and software distribution

by Startacus Admin

A look at Cloudsmith, the Belfast-based startup that provides a fully managed 24/7 Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) for securely storing and sharing assets, packages and containers.
Package management, as we all totally know, is the process of handling all of the archives, binaries, libraries, tools, scripts, modules, snippets, metadata, assets, and datasets that power your processes, products, and solutions - the dependencies and artefacts for your servers, applications, and developers. It’s clear and...and, uh, simple to understand. In order to smooth the processes throughout development, operations, build, and release, the whole toolchain needs a binary package manager, providing centralisation for these dependencies and artefacts.
Belfast-based tech startup Cloudsmith believes that package management is the ‘quintessential modern tool for DevOps’, and has built a SaaS platform offering advanced logistics for software developers, operators, and vendors who need to simplify, secure, manage, and accelerate their product development and distribution.
A potential world-first, theirs is a repository and caching platform, a fully-featured binary package manager that operates in the Cloud, that provides secure digital storage for software assets under development. It distributes millions of artifacts for its customer base worldwide.
“We believe that the concept of provenance will play a defining role in the future of software security and quality. All companies need end-to-end visibility and control of the assets in their software pipelines.” - Alan Carson, CEO of Cloudsmith.
“Customer feedback has shown that a single cloud-based platform for managing software artefacts builds collaboration and communication between teams – a critical aspect of the DevOps culture we facilitate.” - Lee Skillen, CTO.
Part of the Ignite NI Landing Pad initiative in San Francisco, back in November Cloudsmith announced that it had raised one of the largest amounts in a Northern Ireland startup seed round, with £2.1 million, and led by Frontline Ventures and MMC Ventures, and Techstart Ventures.
This funding was put to work fuelling a critical stage of the startup’s growth, boosting R&D and marketing to focus on bringing its universal artefact caching service to market.
We look forward to seeing what comes next.
