Circl - the live action sports game

by Startacus Admin
Manchester-based startup Circl and its live-action sports game, that's providing a new way for sports fans & non-sports fans alike to engage with live sport.
Football. That’s a thing people like. They crowd around the TV in bars or huddle together in a friend’s living room with no respect for the pot pourri on the side table, and they drink beer, eat crisps, and shout at the players to do better.
People also like to bet on sports games, we’re reliably informed, which is not usually that social an activity. But what if you could combine the two aspects and make the betting more social by doing it with friends and taking their money?
Manchester-based startup Circl has built an app they call a ‘live-action sports game’, which is designed to be played with friends. Up to 10 people can place a stake and be in for a chance at winning the jackpot, all depending of course on what happens live on the pitch. You pick your own rules for the game, including whatever in-game events you want, such as yellow cards, red cards, goals, and more.
As the game is played, you can talk to your friends through the app and watch the jackpot circle around them all as those events you picked play out. Once the game is over, one of you will take away the jackpot - minus 10% platform fees - and the rest of you won’t talk to them for a while.
Speaking of 10% platform fees, Circl is big on helping grassroots football, and they will donate every year to men and women’s football in the UK to help protect it and keep it alive.
In July, Circl announced that they had started a crowdfunding campaign on Crowdcube in order to help them create additional game experiences. At the time of writing, with 2 days left in the campaign, they have hit 103% of their £400,000 goal! This comes on the heels of a £375,000 investment last year from Dutch Sport Tech Fund. The goal is to expand to more sports, provide more games, and launch the product in the US.
