bots and us warehouse.

The lowdown on London-based startup BotsAndUs and its autonomous robots that can measure, track and find goods without workflow disruption.

bots andus logoThe future is robotic. We’ve all known for a long time that, eventually, robots would take over the basic tasks that we don’t want to do, or that take time away from our main priorities. Eventually, they will perform all of the jobs that we don’t want, leaving us to pursue our artistic, creative dreams and…what’s that? I have to retrain in ‘cyber’? Robots already do a lot of the work in places like car manufacturing lines, and while the transition for bigger roles like that can be a pain - those human line workers aren’t free to pursue their dreams; they’re simply…without a job - perhaps using robots to make humans’ jobs easier is a better place to start.

botsandus imageLondon-based robotics startup BotsAndUs is doing just that. Their autonomous warehouse robots can keep track of warehouse stock, ensuring that stock levels and physical location are kept up to date without humans having to use up chunks of their work time to do this manually. Having this real-time data flowing in means that productivity will be increased, time and resources won’t be lost to locating missing goods, and delays will be minimised. The startup says that the lack of this kind of real-time data results in the loss of billions of dollars every year.

The robots’ job starts when a consignment of goods arrives, at which point they will move to the unloading bay and scan the pallets for condition and volume. They will then patrol the warehouse 24/7, scanning, taking high-resolution photos, keeping real-time inventory and mapping out the location of everything, saving around 6,000 hours of labour per year.

In June, BotsAndUs announced that they had raised a huge £10.6 million in a seed round led by Swiss venture capital firm Lakestar. This funding will go towards further developing the robots, as well as expanding into Europe and North America.
