BioSure - HIV self testing made easy

by Startacus Admin
We take a look at BioSure, the award-winning startup which has created an innovative HIV self testing kit...

HIV is more manageable than ever these days, but it is not curable and late diagnosis can still have a huge impact on health. Unfortunately, getting tested for something like HIV is something many people either don’t think about or are too embarrassed to do.
With this in mind, something has to be done to allow people to get tested while circumventing any perceived shame or embarrassment of physically going to be tested.
That something is BioSure. The BioSURE HIV Self Test is the first legally approved, CE marked testing kit to become available for sale in the UK. It is easy to use and produces 99.7% accurate results within 15 minutes.
All that is needed is a small pinprick and a very small sample of blood, which is inserted into the bottle that comes with the kit. And that’s it. After 15 minutes, you have your result. Currently, the only other way to test from home is to take a much larger sample of blood and send it away to a lab, which will take several days to give you your results.
This month, BioSure won the Pitch@Palace event in Buckingham Palace, an entrepreneurial event founded by the Duke of York, and it is more than deserved.
Over 40% of people with HIV are diagnosed late, which is far too high a rate for how devastating a late diagnosis can be. A home testing kit with this level of accuracy, available for only £29.95 (or £22.95 on a subscription), is hugely valuable to the cause of looking after our health and improving all of the high numbers we’ve mentioned here.
