Beyondbmi - losing weight and gaining health made easier

by Startacus Admin
Dublin-based healthtech startup Beyondbmi tackles weight loss with its science-based programme led by expert clinicians, nutritionists and health coaches.
It’s that time of year when about 98% of all people everywhere make losing weight one of their new year’s resolutions. It’s one of those things that we would like to happen without having to actually make it happen, because making it happen is hard. We’re aware that being overweight can come with high blood pressure, diabetes, infertility, and more, so we think this year will be the year. But there’s more to it than simply eating less and exercising more, and obsessing over a misleading BMI number, and it’s time to provide a better approach for people looking to lose weight - or, to put it a better way, to gain better health.
Dublin-based startup Beyondbmi is a spinout of University College Dublin’s Nova research and innovation hub, co-founded by medical doctor Harriet Treacy, product designer Peter Lumley, obesity scientists Alex Miras and Carel Le Roux, and clinical nutritionist Werd Al-Najim.
The startup has been working on a science-based programme that combines prescribed obesity medication, nutritional therapy, and one-to-one video coaching for people struggling with obesity. They say that their integrated approach of new drug treatments that combat the biological and hormonal causes of feeling hungry, behavioural treatments, and nutritional therapy that targets the biology underlying obesity can lead to 15% weight loss in just a bit over a year.
For the user, the process is straightforward. First, you will fill out a personalised questionnaire on your health and medical history, and tell Beyondbmi what becoming healthier looks like to you. You’ll then meet your doctor and work together to determine the best options and treatment to achieve your goals, providing a prescription if necessary. Then you’ll meet with your nutritionist and health coach to plan a new diet that you’ll be able to enjoy and maintain, and to set up monthly video coaching sessions.
In January, Beyondbmi announced that they have raised €525,000 in an over-subscribed pre-seed round.
