Automated video subtitling with Subly

by Startacus Admin
Adding subtitles to your videos just became a whole lot easier thanks to Subly, the startup that provides accurate, automated video subtitling for your business videos...
Anyone who has created videos for their business knows that you need to have subtitles. Not only are these necessary for those with hearing impairments, but we all know that as we scroll through social media, we often stop to watch a short video but we leave it on mute and just read the subtitles. 85% of Facebook videos, in fact, are watched on mute. The trouble is that certain video hosting sites’ built-in subtitle generator software is terrible and sometimes wildly inaccurate, so we have to sit and carefully write out what is being spoken, get the timing right, and spend a lot of time doing so that could be spent on other things.
London- and Sydney-based startup Subly knows this pain, and has created a service to provide accurate, automated video subtitling.
All you need to do is securely upload your video to the website, select the language and dialect, choose your subtitle font, colour, and style, and the artificial intelligence will run through it using its industry-leading automatic speech recognition to create highly accurate subtitles.
We wrote in 2017 about Dublin-based Happy Scribe, automatically transcribing audio to a high degree of accuracy. Subly can do a similar thing, just from a different angle. As well as being able to download the SRT file (the file used by video players for subtitles) and your video with those subtitles already embedded, you can also download a text file with your transcription.
This is useful for things like talks and keynote speeches, where the imagery might not be particularly important and you can send out the speech in text form.
All of this is completely free with unlimited use while the platform is in beta, with paid options coming later. (We will be giving it a go ourselves!)
It’s no wonder, then, that Subly recently announced that they have raised €180,000 in pre-seed funding. Something so accurate, free, and useful is pretty rare to come across, and we look forward to seeing what further features they add for video transcription and editing.
