Athos - innovation in climbing shoes

by Startacus Admin
The lowdown on Athos, the Spanish startup that has created a customized climbing shoe that's been made with 3D printing technology.
Sometimes in life, you find yourself in front of a big rock. Not a metaphorical rock; a very real, stony, rocky rock. You could go around the rock. You could call a taxi. Or, you could chalk up and climb that rock like your prehistoric ancestors would. And then, because your car is back down there, you…you can climb back down the rock. And that is fun. Here ends our treatise on the hobby/sport of climbing. Also you’ll need shoes.
Spanish startup Athos has, by shocking coincidence, created a first of its kind: a 3D-printed climbing shoe. Of course, anyone not really keeping up with the advancement of 3D printing might, upon hearing this, conjure up images of crunchy, fragile plastic clogs; however, 3D printing has come a long way since those early days of delicate layers of brittle plastic that barely stick together, and now we have 3D-printed houses, clothes, and now shoes.
The process begins with scanning your feet, just using your phone and their app. Athos will then 3D print a shoe specifically tailored to your feet using HP Multi Jet Fusion 3D printing. The shoes will then go through post-processing, be assembled, and shipped, and you’ll be scrambling up sheer rock faces like a mountain goat-monkey in no time.
Good footwear is vitally important in an activity that can easily cause injury, so having these bespoke shoes created specifically for you will make your feet not only more comfortable, but safer.
We have written in the past about the amount of waste that is produced by the fashion industry, and this manner of creating shoes means the only waste created will be those little burrs left by the printer that are filed off in post-processing. Athos is dedicated to making their processes as sustainable and environmentally friendly as they are innovative.
Athos has reached the national finals of the James Dyson Award, and we look forward to finding out in September if they will make it through to the next round!
