ApisProtect - smarter beehives

by Startacus Admin

The agtech IoT solution from ApisProtect to help beekeepers keep their hives productive and healthy...

In Ireland alone, a third of bee species face extinction. Bees contribute €153 billion worth of pollination to the agriculture industry every year, and we depend on them for one third of the food we eat. Perhaps it’s because they are small or perhaps because they aren’t cute and fluffy, but whatever the case, it seems as though people just don’t care. So once again it falls to entrepreneurs and startups to save the day!
Cork-based agritech startup ApisProtect is on the case, with its IoT solution to give beekeepers an early warning system for keeping their hives healthy. Things like disease can break out in a hive between a beekeeper’s periodic checks, and if not caught in time, the entire hive can be lost.
ApisProtect’s platform uses advanced sensors and machine learning to monitor beehives 24/7, helping beekeepers to catch these issues before they worsen, monitor the productivity of hives, or even simply keep an eye on things when conditions make a physical check more difficult, such as bad weather or in the middle of the night. And its smart alerts make sure that you don’t need to be glued to the app in order to be made aware of important events in your beehives.
ApisProtect’s founder, Dr Fiona Edwards Murphy, has already received awards from the Irish Research Council, the IEEE, IBM, The Irish Laboratory Awards, and Google, as well as the Sodexo WMB Female Newcomer Award 2018. With its team of engineering, scientific, beekeeping experts, ApisProtect currently monitors six million bees (give or take a few bees, we suspect) across Europe and North America.
The startup recently raised €1.5m in seed funding, which will go towards building their team and expanding its protective reach across the UK, North America, and South Africa.
Those fluffy little black and yellow creatures hold an importance to human life hugely disproportionate to their size, and a startup that is doing its part to return the favour has us buzzing!
