The lowdown on Achelous Energy, the UK-based startup that's developing innovative solutions to help reduce C02 emissions and achieve Net Zero.

245159620_102276105581033_1504600873901942829_nWater’s pretty good. It could be said that it’s quite important to the continuing existence of life on the planet. More importantly, it makes coffee. But have you ever considered powering your Playstation with it? Of course, it’s nothing new to use water to generate electricity, but with the louder and louder calls for renewable energy, hydroelectricity is becoming more important. With it, the means to generate and store this electricity must improve, provide scalability, and strive for affordability. Moving water is something that doesn’t change with the moods of the weather gods, like the wind and sun do, making it arguably the most valuable source of renewable energy.

achelous-energy-fittsEdenbridge-based startup Achelous Energy has been developing a floating hydrokinetic platform capable of generating non-stop energy from rivers. The platform sits in a river and its two vertical-axis turbines generate electricity without impeding the river’s flow. Because they produce constant energy, there is no need for large storage solutions, and the platform can be used domestically or industrially, scalable for use in anything from small communities to grid-scale.

It goes without saying, yet is vitally important at this stage in our climate change situation, that the startup’s platform does not produce harmful emissions. The platform’s full name is the floating in-stream tidal and solar platform (FITS), because, not to waste the above-water surfaces of the platform, it also comes covered in solar panels for extra energy generation.

In November 2021, Achelous Energy completed a Seedrs fundraising campaign with 208% of their target. This, along with their partnership with the Nepal Energy Foundation, has helped them to conduct scale-model tests of their platform in Myanmar, and the development of a future pilot programme, and they hope to soon drive further development with a Series A round ahead of going to market in Europe, the Americas, and Southeast Asia.
