The lowdown on About:Energy, the innovative startup that's accelerating and enhancing battery development for the manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace sectors.

MtaJWU4g_400x400With the rise of cleaner, electric-based energy comes the need to store that energy. Electric vehicles and the like require batteries, and with the UK’s ban on new petrol and diesel vehicles coming ever closer, those batteries are going to have to up their game. Just like a traditional car with a combustion engine will have varying levels of economy depending on various factors, an electric car will drain its batteries faster or slower depending on similar factors.

Something to be taken into account with an electric car, however, is the performance of the battery itself. If we are to rely more and more on batteries, we also need to maximise the performance and safety of those batteries.

about energy picOxfordshire-based tech startup About:Energy is dedicated to doing just this. The Imperial College London and University of Birmingham spin-out turns, as they put it, ‘physical batteries into digital tools to accelerate the development of new technologies’.

Their technology optimises the lifetime, performance, and safety of batteries using advanced predictive models. Their solution is applicable no matter the type of battery - be it chemical or solid-state - and regardless of application, and is tailored to each client’s needs, ensuring the maximum actionable insights are delivered.

In May, About:Energy was one of 13 clean energy SMEs to be awarded a share of £1.8m from Coventry’s Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) to help in the struggle to decarbonise transport. This comes through APC’s Technology Developer Acceleration Programme (TDAP), which will help the businesses to drive their technologies’ market-readiness.

This technology will not only help maximise performance of existing battery technology, but will accelerate the development of new technologies, and their commercialisation. Faster, better, simpler digital R&D means more cost-effective R&D, removing barriers for smaller businesses developing new battery technology, and allowing the tech to progress at a rate that reflects our needs.
