5 Security Tips Every Small Business Needs to Know

by Startacus Admin
Whether it’s protecting a website or network against cyber attacks or securing the physical premises a business occupies, security is an important consideration. As a small business owner, you can’t afford to learn the hard way just how important security is to your continued survival. Fortunately, good security isn’t difficult to achieve.
Here are five pieces of the most essential security advice for small business owners.
Keep Your Systems Up-to-Date
Cybersecurity is a very real concern for any modern business, regardless of the space it is operating in. You can have the best physical security in the world, but it will all be for naught if you are easily compromised digitally. Don’t underestimate the kind of damage that cybercriminals can cause.
For example, if an intruder was to plant the right piece of malicious software on your system, they could be siphoning off bank records and other sensitive information.
You should also remember that, under the new GDPR, businesses can face serious fines for not keeping their customer data secure. It is now even more imperative that you ensure you keep all your digital records just as secure as your physical ones.
Install CCTV
Should you discover that you have been robbed or that there is a serious incident on your business premises, you will want to have CCTV in place to capture it. CCTV is great for capturing any incidents that do occur, but it is also an effective deterrent. This is why CCTV cameras are not usually designed to be overly discrete.
When it comes to the actual CCTV installation, it is a good idea to engage the services of professional CCTV installers like ACCL. Professional installers like these, should be able to advise you on where to best position the cameras, as well as ensuring that everything works properly."
Invest in Security Lighting
Security lighting is a very effective way of scaring off would-be intruders. Security lighting makes use of very bright lights, which are activated by motion sensors. Should anyone get too close to your premises after hours, they will be illuminated and very conspicuous. This will hopefully be enough to send them packing.
Get an Alarm System
It might seem crazy to even contemplate operating a business from any premises which isn’t alarmed, but you’d be surprised how many businesses are currently doing exactly that. We all know how alarm systems work and what their advantages are.
A Safe is a Must
Just like an alarm system, no business should be operating today without a decent physical safe to keep all of their documents secure. Ironically enough, some businesses are now so fixated on their cybersecurity that they overlook the basics.
You can’t put a price on security, especially when it comes to your business. If you want to ensure your business’s long-term survival, you will need a strategy for keeping it safe and secure. It is also important that you strike the right balance between your physical security needs and your cybersecurity.
