4 Free Cyber Security Tips for Start-Ups

by Startacus Admin
Cyber security is one of the most talked about issues in the twenty-first century. We are constantly told to increase our security practices and to be aware of the various cyber threats that exist. Recent cyber-attacks on big businesses, such as Sony, Staples and the Home Depot, have been particularly embarrassing. But how do startups ensure maximum security with limited resources?
Below are 4 free security tips for startups:
1. Educate
Providing your team with periodic training can significantly reduce the possibility of human error that could result in a breach. You’re probably aware of phishing scams. Hackers attempt to extract sensitive data by creating clever, persuasive or believable looking text encouraging people to click on links; aka phishing scams. And sadly they still work. One Reddit user shared the story of his company’s HR representative falling victim to a scam, sending all of the employee’s tax information to a fraudster. Train employees on what to watch out for and provide some tangible examples.
2. Passwords
Create passwords using lower and upper case letters, numbers and symbols and change these passwords frequently. If you are struggling for ideas, use a free password generator online.Consider implementing multi-factor authentication that requires additional information beyond a password to gain entry. Additionally, for those willing to part with a few pounds, consider using a paid for 1password or Last Pass.
3. Update
Download software and app updates as soon as they appear, as they contain vital security upgrades that keep your devices and business information safe. While it may sometimes be tedious to wait for these to download on your computer, this is absolutely critical in ensuring the safety of your data.
4. Hide
If you have a Wi-Fi network for your workplace, make sure it is secure, encrypted, and hidden. Password protect access to your router. To hide your Wi-Fi network, set up your wireless access point or router so it does not broadcast the network name, known as the Service Set Identifier (SSID).
When you just start a business, reputation is crucial. Strong cyber security can create value, as it can boost your reputation as a secure and safe platform. By handling breaches with ease, you quickly become recognized as a reliable organization that prioritizes customer integrity.
